I: Politics, Religion, Law and Society
The first volume (printed version: 50 essays, 541 pages) is concerned with the historical interconnections between state, church, and society. Particular attention is paid here to those structures and processes which in retrospect appear relevant to the historico-political culture of the present. From a historical and anthropological point of view, insight is also provided into the everyday lives and worlds of the people who experienced the Thirty Years' War as their hardly conceivable destiny - and thus longed all the more passionately for "golden peace". |
|
II: Art and culture
Essay volume II (printed version: 71 essays, 735 pages) is devoted to the arts: One of the leading motifs here is the fascinating interplay between war and art, art and peace. However ambivalent the influence of the historical events on art can be judged to have been - flourishing art centres as well as entire regions were laid to waste and lost to art for centuries -, the reactions of the arts to war and peace were multifarious: On one end of the spectrum was the realistic - or supposedly realistic - representation of the events, on the other end allegorical painting, which employed the inconography of Christianity or classical mythology as a means of condensing the fears and hopes of the times in visual imaggery. |
